Modular Wastewater Treatment Systems

The UK faces growing demand for more affordable and compact treatment plants that can be deployed quickly due to stricter regulations, rising Mogden and potable water charges, and increasing compliance pressures across both the municipal and industrial sectors.

Traditional plants often require significant time and cost to plan, design, and install, making them prohibitive for some.

Alpheus offers a simple, cost-effective solution: a plug-and-play containerised Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) system, with optional pre-treatment technologies. This ensures high-quality treatment and compliance without the complexity.

This modular wastewater treatment unit is factory-built, self-contained, and scalable. Housed in a compact container, it integrates easily with existing processes, treats wastewater quickly, and can be relocated or sold when no longer needed.

Why should I consider a modular wastewater treatment plant?

Organisations are facing increasing water challenges, with compliance and cost being the primary drivers. A modular system helps solve these challenges to help:

  • Reduce Mogden charges by removing BOD/COD.
  • Avoid pollution incidents and fines as regulations tighten.
  • Improve water stewardship through reuse and lower carbon impact.
  • Gain resilience against water scarcity and reduce supply costs.
  • Minimise on-site resource needs with automation and remote monitoring.
  • Enhance brand reputation and scale operations quickly and cost-effectively.

Benefits of a modular MBR system

Economy

At over 70% lower CAPEX than a traditional plant, offering potential savings of around £1 million. Automated operation and remote monitoring reduce manpower needs, delivering the best lifecycle cost per cubic metre treated.

Speed

The system can be operational within three months, compared to approximately eighteen months for conventional plants. Factory-built, delivered, and commissioned in weeks, it facilitates immediate compliance with AMP8/PE24 targets

Sustainability

The system provides nutrient polishing and tertiary treatment without major rebuilds. It is scalable and relocatable for seasonal peaks or problem sites. Plus, when no longer needed, it can be sold for reuse rather than lying dormant.

How does it work?

Process Steps
  1. A rotary screen removes coarse solids to protect downstream membranes and prevent blockages.
  2. The anoxic chamber biologically removes nitrogen compounds under low-oxygen conditions.
  3. An aeration and nitrification chamber removes BOD and COD through high-efficiency air diffusers.
  4. Submerged high-efficiency and low-energy Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes remove further contaminants to achieve a high-quality effluent for safe discharge (or reuse).

Our modular MBR system combines advanced treatment technologies in a fully automated, remotely monitored unit. Each container processes 25–400 m³/day, achieving:

  • <20 mg/L BOD
  • <50 mg/L COD
  • <50 mg/L TSS
  • <15 mg/L T
